Advice
The following are guides as to what to do in the case of an accident. Although primarily for the UK, most points will apply in other countries.
Personal Injury Accidents
- Note as much information as you can when the accident occurs - who, what, where and when.
- Make sure the accident is recorded in their accident book, if on commercial property.
- Make a note of the insurance details of the other party.
- Ensure the names and addresses of witnesses are noted, at or immediately after the accident.
- Ensure that injuries are treated by a hospital or your own doctor, to serve as a record.
- Obtain details from police if in attendance, such as officer number and station.
- Obtain photographs of your injuries with comparisons, for example both hands if only one injured.
- Obtain photographs of the scene of the accident from a number of angles, with general views and close ups of the actual point of the accident. A size reference item, such as a drinks can, should be included to give scale.
- Keep a diary of all actions and expenses, with relevant dates and times.
- In the UK contact Countrywide Claimsline for advice or to make a compensation claim, if you were not to blame.
Vehicle Accidents
- Note as much information as you can when the accident occurs - weather, lighting, who, what, where and when.
- Do not admit liability by use of such terms as "I am sorry...".
- Make a note of the insurance details, home address and licence plate of the other parties.
- Ensure the names and addresses of witnesses at or immediately after the accident are noted.
- Obtain details from police if in attendance, such as officer number and station.
- Obtain photographs of the scene of the accident from a number of angles - carry a disposable camera (with flash) in your glove box.
- Keep a diary of all actions and expenses, with relevant dates and times.
